Protafloc tablets are a tabletted carrageenan product which is added to the wort in the kettle to enhance protein removal as the wort cools.

The active ingredient in Protafloc tablets is a polysaccharide called carrageenan which is derived from seaweed. Carrageenan in solution is

negatively charged, owing to the sulphate groups along the polysaccharide backbone. It is these charged sites which interact with wort proteins.

Protafloc tablets should be added to the kettle ten minutes prior to the end of the boil. The addition time reflects the length of time required to dissolve and disperse the carrageenan into the wort. Should Protafloc tablets be added early in the boil, then degradation of the polymer may occur and product efficiency is lost.

Good Tablets

Just converted to all grain brewing at creatives warehouse, used these protafloc tabs and they work a treatphil kinner ()

Worth moving up a notch?

I used to buy from the On The House (£43) range and was always very happy with them and made dozens of 30 bottle kits up. Until, that is, there was an offer on WineXpert kits at the same price rather than the normal £53. So I had nothing to lose in trying the more expensive kit. I found it was definitely worth the extra tenner (more grape juice giving more depth of flavour). So I now stick with WineXpert even at the higher price. Fantastic shop and service.

I live a long distance away but was staying with relatives for the weekend. Decided to visit the shop and so glad I did. They have everything that a home brewer could possibly need.
